Your wedding day is said to beone of the happiest day of your life. But pre-wedding anxiety, nerves and wedding jitters can cause wedding stress and cold feet. Not surprisingly research shows the build up to a wedding day frequently develops into one of the most stressful periods of the couple's relationship.

Your wedding - whose day is it?

Your wedding day is said to be one of the happiest days of your life. This belief can place extremely high expectations on the occasion. Not surprisingly research shows the build up to a wedding frequently develops into one of the most stressful periods of the couple's relationship.

Organising weddings can uncover previously hidden tensions, aspirations and expectations of family and friends.

  • Differences between the two families be they financial, religious, cultural, political, social.
  • The couple's parents confronting their own emotional issues; if, for example, they have divorced, re-married.
  • Power struggles. Who takes control?
  • Expenses. Who pays the bills?
  • Or even differences in attitudes to alcohol consumption between the two families.

The couple themselves, and/or family members often approach weddings with fixed ideas and expectations.

Is this the day to put all differences aside and come together in love and support of the couple? Or not?

Counselling can help the couple identify and avoid problems before the wedding. It also helps them avoid some common post-wedding feelings such as guilt, shame, disappointment, or the feeling of having been manipulated.

Approached in a constructive way, the couple may indeed find that their wedding day is one of the happiest days of their lives.
