Redundancy Counselling.

I have been contacted by both individuals and by HR departments asking me to see employees facing redundancy

Many of us tend to withdraw at a time when we most need support either because we don’t want to worry family or friends or through a sense of personal failure. But this is the time we most need to talk.

For many of us work is a large part of how we define ourselves; when that goes our anchor is gone. We can experience loss of identity as the provider, loss of self-respect or loss of a dream. As a result, our relationships with others and with ourselves can suffer. It is easy to fall into the role of victim, to feel despair, and to lose our sense of control over our lives.

Our reaction to redundancy tends to go through a cycle. Therapy can help in identifying its phases, our reactions to them, and so help us move through it.

A typical cycle:

  • Shock / Panic
  • Hurt, loss of confidence
  • Anger
  • Depression
  • Reconciliation
  • Acceptance

We each of us go through the cycle in our own way, and with the help of a therapist we can get a chance to re-evaluate our personal priorities. At the same time society as a whole seems to be in the process of confronting and evaluating its priorities.
